Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often, in one place. If yours is not here, phone 0800 223 555 or send the form at the bottom of the page.

About our services

What electrical services do you provide?

We provide a wide range of electrical services, including residential, commercial and industrial electrical work, installations, repairs, fault finding, lighting, switchboards, power outlets, wiring, heat pumps, EV chargers and electrical upgrades. Each is described on its own page: industrial, automation and instrumentation, commercial, residential, solar and energy, heat pumps and ventilation and maintenance and fault finding.

Are you insured?

Yes. We carry appropriate business and liability insurance to provide protection for our customers and our team while carrying out electrical work.

Do you offer emergency electrical services?

Yes, we can assist with urgent electrical issues such as power failures, electrical faults, damaged wiring and other potentially hazardous problems. Contact us on 0800 223 555 to discuss your situation and availability.

Do you provide electrical inspections and safety checks?

Yes. We can inspect electrical systems and identify potential faults, safety concerns, or areas that may require maintenance or upgrading.

Do you fix household appliances like dishwashers?

No, we do not repair appliances, but we can refer you to a business that does. We do wire in new ovens, hobs, rangehoods and other fixed appliances.

Where do you work?

We are based in Ruakaka and work throughout Bream Bay, from Maungaturoto and Mangawhai through to Whangarei. For industrial and larger commercial projects we travel further across Northland. If you are not sure whether we cover your address, ring and ask.

What are your hours?

Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pm. If you have lost power or have a fault that cannot wait, phone rather than sending the form, so we can tell you straight away what we can do.

Quotes, certificates and paperwork

Do you give a price before you start?

Yes. For a straightforward job we can often give you a price on the phone. For anything bigger we come and look first, so the quote is based on what is actually in your walls or your switchboard rather than a guess.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

Yes. Electrical work in New Zealand has to be certified, and we provide the Certificate of Compliance and Electrical Safety Certificate the regulations require for the work we do. Keep them with your house or building records; insurers, buyers and building inspectors may ask for them.

How do I check that an electrician is licensed?

Every electrical worker in New Zealand must hold a current practising licence. You can look anyone up on the Electrical Workers Registration Board public register.

Homes

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Signs include old ceramic fuses, no RCDs, breakers that trip often, a board that feels warm or smells hot, or no room for a new circuit. If you are adding a heat pump, induction cooktop or EV charger, it is worth having the board checked first. We will tell you honestly whether yours needs replacing.

Why does my RCD keep tripping?

An RCD trips when it detects current leaking to earth. The cause is often a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or damaged wiring. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset it; if it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs an electrician.

Do you install EV chargers?

Yes. An EV charger needs its own circuit and protection, and we check that your switchboard and supply can take the extra load before we install it.

Can you work with my builder on a new home?

Yes. We work alongside builders and architects on new homes and renovations, from the electrical plan through rough-in to fit-off, and we fit around the building programme.

Solar, heat pumps and ventilation

Do I need a battery with a solar system?

No. Most systems work without one, exporting surplus power to the grid. A battery lets you use more of your own solar in the evening, and some people want one for backup. Whether it makes sense depends on how you use power and on current battery prices, and we can run through it with you.

Can solar keep my house running in a power cut?

A standard grid-connected system shuts down when the grid goes down, for the safety of line workers. Keeping some power on during an outage needs a battery system designed for backup, which we can explain if it matters to you.

Does a heat pump need its own circuit?

Yes. A heat pump runs on a dedicated circuit from the switchboard with its own protection, and an isolating switch at the outdoor unit. That is part of every installation we do.

Do you install bathroom extractor fans and home ventilation?

Yes. We install bathroom and laundry extractor fans and kitchen rangehoods ducted to the outside, and whole-home ventilation systems such as SmartVent.

Commercial and industrial

Can you work to our site's health and safety systems?

Yes. We are accustomed to permit-to-work systems, electrical isolations, job safety analyses, site inductions, inspection and test plans and project-specific health and safety requirements, alongside our own health and safety policy.

Do you work on PLCs and control panels?

Yes. Control panel builds and modifications, PLC input and output wiring, remote I/O, interlocks, drives and the field instruments that connect to them. We work alongside your integrator if someone else writes the PLC program.

Can you schedule work around production?

We plan with you. Larger work can be staged or timed for planned shutdowns, and we will tell you in advance what needs to be isolated and for how long, so production is not surprised.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. We set up preventative maintenance schedules for businesses and industrial sites, with regular inspections and priority when something goes wrong.

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Talk to us about it. For work that would disrupt customers or staff, we can plan the noisy or shut-down parts of the job to cause as little disruption as possible.
